Description

Common Name: Bigleaf hydrangea

*For gardeners in Zone 5, we advise planting H. macrophyllas in a sheltered location and giving them a winter mulch. This will provide protection from winds and cold temperatures

Hydrangeas are among the showiest of all the flowering shrubs. Versatile and generally easy to care for, this beautiful shrub will dazzle any landscape.

‘All Summer Beauty’ is a mophead cultivar of Hydrangea macrophylla that typically blooms on both old and new wood (produces flower buds not only in fall but also on new growth in spring and summer), meaning you’ll have a constant viewing of wonderful and showy flowers from June to late September. The colour of the blooms can be altered from blue to pink (based on soil pH), and this shade of blue is rare to find in garden plants.

Size: 4in/(1 quart) 2year old plant, often will flower in the first season

Height: 3.0-4.0’

Spread: 3.0-4.0’

Flower Description: Flowers 4-6″ in diameter and form in large clusters (mophead cultivar) that consist mostly of large, sterile florets that cover the smaller and less showy fertile florets. Colour depends on soil pH and can range from Blue (highly acidic) to varying shades of lilac (slightly acidic) or pink (alkaline). Prolific flowering occurs due to floral development  on old growth in the fall and also on new stems in the late spring and early summer.

Light Requirement: Partial Sun

Soil Type: Best grown in rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Add aluminum sulfate to make flowers bluer or add lime to make flowers pinker. Any changes made to the soil should be done in late autumn or early spring well before the flowering period and minerals used should be diluted well.

Hardiness Zones: 5(tender),6,7,8,9,10

Attributes: Attracts butterflies, Attracts Bees, Deer Resistant, Showy Flowers

Care: Medium maintenance with moderate watering during flowering season, Pruning in spring (⅓ of total branch length), Mulch to reduce water loss
