Description
Common Name: Botanical Tulip ‘Praestans Unicum’, Tulipa praestans
Tulipa praestens ‘Unicum’ is a spectacular variety – let me count the ways. This cayenne red species tulip sports wildly variegated leaves, a very rare sight among tulips. As a species tulip, you can count on it to naturalize for you and come back every spring. Those bright blooms open to wide stars with maturity that bloom en masse!
Botanical tulips are what tulips used to look like and still look like in the wild. They are smaller in bulb size, height, and flower size than your standard spring tulips but they are just as colourful and perhaps a little bit more sophisticated. They look more like sparkling jewels than a big brash boisterous flower.
Bulbs require well drained soil. Will not perform well if soil holds too much water. Add sand or grit to the bottom of the hole to improve drainage.
