Description

Common Name: Wildflower Tulip, Cretan Rock Tulip, ‘Saxatilis’

Tulipa saxatilis is an attractive species tulip with bicoloured flowers, native to the rocky islands of the Aegean Sea, including Crete and Kos. Given its short stature, it is ideal for growing at the front of borders alongside other spring flowering perennials, and it provides a light yet pleasing fragrance.
An early to mid spring bloomer, this ‘Saxatilis’ is one of the most stunning of the wildflower tulips –  they have a star-like appearance once fully open, which is fully accented by the overlap of orchid pink petals and bright golden centers. Truly a lovely choice for naturalising in grass and will gradually spread by underground runners. It also performs well in pots and containers.

Botanical tulips are what tulips used to look like and still look like in the wild. They are smaller in bulb size, height, and flower size than your standard spring tulips but they are just as colourful and perhaps a little bit more sophisticated. They look more like sparkling jewels than a big brash boisterous flower.

Bulbs require well drained soil. Will not perform well if soil holds too much water. Add sand or grit to the bottom of the hole to improve drainage.
