Description

Common Name: ‘Guardian of the Monastery’ Tree Peony, Tree Hybrid Peony, Rock’s peony, hybrid rockii

This a Euro-American hybrid tree peony from the breeder William Gratwick. It is a Paeonia rockii cultivar, so more strictly a Rock’s peony than a tree peony.

There is no consensus on the bloom form, it being variable and straddling some form between single and semi-double. Different blooms on the same plant have even fallen at different places on this continuum. Typically, the blooms are open and airy, and always being well short of being fully double.

The colours of the early-season bloom also display immense variability. The petals are described variously as being from pink to mauve to lavender, with deep purple patches or flares commonly occurring at the bases of petals. The blooms open over a longer course of time relative to many other tree peonies. ‘Guardian of the Monastery’ is hardy and highly durable, being resistant to damage from inclement weather as it stands guard.
